Dr. Kelly Vodden Featured in the Telegram

The Telegram recently featured EPI’s Dr. Kelly Vodden and other On the Move researchers in their publication. Their article focused on the benefits and consequences of industrial projects.

One Memorial University researcher is looking at the long-term impacts of projects such as the Hebron offshore oil and gas project and the Vale nickel processing operation on communities such as Sunnyside, Long Harbour, Clarenville and St. John’s.

“My research is examining how regions in our province are impacted by industrial development from a sustainability perspective,” said Kelly Vodden, an associate professor (research) at MUN’s Grenfell Campus.

“There are a number of opportunities, but also challenges associated with working in these projects, such as the long commute for people travelling from areas such as St. John’s or even Gander, affordable housing and access to facilities for people who decide to relocate.”

The research is part of a larger seven-year Canadian research initiative known as the On the Move Partnership which includes more than 45 researchers from 24 universities working with multiple community partners.
