EPI students attend and participate in climate change conference in Newfoundland
Four EPI Master Arts in Environmental Policy (MAEP) graduate students participated in a regional climate change symposium held in Corner Brook and Rocky Harbour during the month of May. The conference was hosted jointly by Grenfell Campus and the Gros Morne Cooperating Association.
MAEP students Dongjun Lee, Vincent Chireh, Abdulai Abdul-Rahim, and Mohammad Nazrul Islam (all pictured) attended and participated in the symposium, entitled “Coastal Communities in a Changing Climate”. The symposium sought to outline and discuss the impacts, challenges, and solutions around climate change in relation to the target region of Gros Morne, Newfoundland and Labrador. The three-day event was also broadcast live via radio (VOBB – Voice of Bonne Bay), and live-streamed online through Ryakuga Grassroots Communication, which the students also helped facilitate.
Along with presentations from researchers, practitioners and community members from across Canada, participants shared in a public forum aimed at discussing climate change adaptation strategies and building knowledge networks about potential climate change impacts and solutions. Participants also enjoyed a taste of local Newfoundland culture at an evening “shed party” amidst the natural surrounding beauty of Gros Morne.
Said one student reflecting on the symposium event, ‘I’ve enjoyed this symposium very much, and have learned a great deal about climate change in the local setting’.
