Current MAEP Graduate Student Starts New Position with the Nunatsiavut Government

Jason Dicker is a current graduate student supervised by Dr. Stephen Decker, in the Master of Arts in Environmental Policy program at EPI, Grenfell Campus.  Jason recently started a new position with the Nunatsiavut Government as their Wildlife Manager in the Department of Lands & Natural Resources. Under the supervision of the Director of Renewable Resources, Jason is responsible for the management and general technical administration of all wildlife programs, policies and activities in accordance with the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement for the Nunatsiavut Government.

This new career path relates to Jason’s graduate thesis on wildlife management, policy development, and Indigenous knowledge in terms of environmental policy. His graduate thesis closely looked at the George River Caribou Herd hunting ban and the impacts it has on northern Labrador Inuit. Jason’s studies and research brought him to all Nunatsiavut communities last summer and fall to document Inuit knowledge and social perspective from Nunatsiavut Inuit and how this caribou hunting ban is affecting them.

As a wildlife manager, Jason will also be working closely with stakeholders and partners such as the Torngat Wildlife and Plants Co-Management Board, Inuit Tapariit Kanatami and relevant provincial and federal departments. He will represent the Nunatsiavut Government on regional, provincial, national, international and Inuit Nunangat committees and to recommend and draft policies and guidelines for the Nunatsiavut Government on matters related to wildlife.
