Jannatul Islam – Internship with the Indian Bay Ecosystem Corporation

I am doing my internship in central Newfoundland, working on developing processes around community gardening in the region. The overarching goal of the project is to address the issues surrounding food security in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

The organization I am working for is called the Indian Bay Ecosystem Corp. I have been here since June interning under the guidance of Dr. Kelly Vodden. Dr.Vodden is a Professor at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Kelly’s work is focused largely on sustainable rural community and regional  involvement,  resilience, and development, as well complex adaptive social-ecological systems, green economies and community-corporate relations.

My daily activities fall under four major categories, which can be explained as follows:

1. Social communication and collaboration

2. Organization surrounding the first community gardens in C-W-T and Indian Bay Town.

3. Engaging with youth involvement strategies and community participation

4. Producing youth learning documents, presentations and reports

In addition to the above mentioned daily activities, I am writing a report under Dr. Kelly’s guidance. The project I am working on will serve as my requisite internship report however, it will also be featured as a chapter in “Food Futures NL Anthology” edited by Dr. Catherine Keske (Associate Professor – EPI).

I am also working on my Non-profit organization. The organization is called the World Wide Holistic Sustainable Development Cooperation. More information on the project can be found at WWHSDC.org
